So, you want to create a set of promotional graphics for your business, but don’t have all the time in the world? No problem! This step by step guide will walk you through the basics of Canva. But not only that, but it will also remind you of the vital promotional elements to include when it comes to marketing. Grab your laptop (or your phone!) and I’ll meet you back here to begin. Go!
A quickie before I begin, not only am I passionate about this platform, I’m also affiliated as a Canva Certified Creative! What does being a CCC mean? I get to test out new features before they are released
Step 1. Sign Up To Canva
Depending on the device you are using, either download the Canva app from the app store or head to the website www.canva.com/. Both platforms work fantastically depending on how you work best, although I would note that the image library varies very slightly between the two, so they’re both well worth a look.
Now that you’ve arrived, all you need to do is sign up with your details and get creating within minutes.
Step 2. Prep Your Canvas
Whether you’re starting from scratch or using a template, we need prep our canvas!
Begin by picking a canvas or template that is the right dimension for sharing to your chosen social media platform. If you’re making several graphics, you can always size them up to post across a variety of platforms.
Decide on your background! Set the background of your template to a solid colour, or alternatively drag and drop an image that is relevant to your promotion. Those of you with lots to say and photos to include may opt for a solid colour to help the information show up, while an artist may use a painting as the background to carry the promotion.
Clean up. If there’s any excess text blocks or images you don’t want to make use of, get rid. You always have the ability to add texts and images so if you decide at a later date that you want to add more, you can!
Step 3. Share The Details
Before we start playing with different layouts and designs, let’s get the basics down on paper. Including any vital information in your promotion will help to visualise how much content you have and where it all needs to go.
In a textbox (or a word document if it’s easier! You can always copy and paste) let your audience know what is happening! Are you selling a product? Launching a membership? Offering a 1:1 call? Whatever it is, give them all the details. This might include;
- The product or service
- How many? Maybe there is a limited number on offer.
- How long for? Is there a time limit or deadline?
- Time and date
Step 4. Call To Action
Now that your audience knows what you’re offering, let’s get them moving! No, it doesn’t have to be all singing all dancing, but they do need an enticing offer and a call to action.
This could come in many different forms…
“Read more” could have readers running over to your website hunting through blogposts for hidden gems.
“Shop now” will most likely have customers getting lost in your online store for hours.
And “Sign up” ensures another real-life human subscribing to your mailing list. Bonus!
You decide which call to action will work best for you and your product, just ensure that it stands out!
Step 5. Upload All Promotional Imagery
To add some personality to your promotion, you could always think about working in a photograph of yourself, or the business owner. People like to relate to real people. Social media is all about bringing people together and connecting across the world! Often, including photographs of the person behind the screen can make customers more likely to buy into an online business as they feel they’re buying into a community.
Note: We’re not talking selfies here, think more… Head shots!
Don’t think this is necessary for your business? Keep your audience engaged with photos of your products instead! This is your mini moment to sell, sell, sell. You have the viewers’ attention, so don’t miss out on this opportunity to show off your best angels! Of the product, I mean.
Step 6. Upload Logo
Don’t forget to add your business logo to all of your promotional graphics! This is the last step but by no means the least important. A logo is a way of identifying your business, product and/or service by symbol or name.
In order to create that link between business and logo for your customers, ensure that you add it to all of your promotional graphics – as well as your website, letterheads, products, etc. You may even consider adding it to the same position on your graphics from a streamline, professional look.
That was easy! You can’t go wrong with these 6 simple steps, and Canva makes the whole process so achievable. Once you’ve signed up, all you need to do is combine the details with the visuals and throw in a call to action. Viola! You can create a set of promotional graphics that not only embody your brand identity and convey your brand message but also can also reach audiences far and wide across the web. Sound too easy? I promise it isn’t. Get started today with Canva.
