How To Set Personalised Goals

Most people (especially when it comes to business) set very general goals, with no real strategy to get their or targets for evaluation.

They look a bit like this:

  • Gain a following on social media
  • Increase sales
  • Make connections

Vague, or what!?

Diving Deeper

If your goal was to gain a following on social media, I would ask yourself a few questions to expand this goal:

How many followers do you want to gain?
On what social media platform?
Who will they be? Who is your ideal client audience?
Why? How will having more followers benefit you?
How are you going to gain these followers?
When do you want to achieve this goal by?
How will you measure your progress?

After answering these questions, your goal might look a little more like this:

Increase my following on Instagram by 2k this year, averaging 160 per month, using freebies and upping my interaction. These will be an interactive and engaged group of mums in their 30s looking to start their own online business but are clueless when it comes to social media. These followers will buy in to my course increasing my revenue, while also sharing my content within the platform, increasing my visibility amongst a similar audience. I will check back monthly to evaluate my progress.

See the difference?

Now your goal is jam-packed with the what, the how and the why! This is another way of saying your ‘strategy’ and ‘targets’.

Breaking Your Goals Down

You could also break it down like this:

Goals: Increase my following on Instagram by 2k this year, they will be an interactive and engaged group of mums in their 30s looking to start their own online business but are clueless when it comes to social media.

Strategy: Use freebies to attract audience to my platform and increase my interaction to create a relationship.

Targets: Followers will increase by an average of 160 per month, I will check back monthly to evaluate my progress. These followers will buy in to my course increasing my revenue, while also sharing my content within the platform, increasing my visibility amongst a similar audience.

All this is really, is the age-old technique we learnt in school: the 5 W’s. Who What When Where Why (and don’t forget the how!)

It’s so important to dive deep into your goals. Really!

Generic goals just don’t work for every business, it’s not a one size fits all, because every one of your businesses are so different!

If your biz is unique, then your goals should be too. And your business *is* uniquely yours!
